The Color of Georgetown

Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia | Urban Heritage District

This series explores Malaysia, the historic streets of Georgetown, Penang, through its weathered architectural surfaces and everyday urban details. Focusing on doors, windows, and layered facades, the work examines how color, texture, and ornament reflect the cultural and historical complexity of the city.

Peeling paint, oxidized metal, and fading pigments reveal a built environment shaped by time, climate, and continuous use. The distinct palette, muted pastels, worn blues, and sun-faded reds—functions as both visual language and cultural marker, tracing the intersection of colonial influence and local identity.

Rather than documenting landmarks, the photographs center on overlooked fragments that hold the imprint of daily life. These surfaces act as quiet records of continuity and change, preserving traces of a place where history remains embedded in the present.
